A lawnmower is necessity if you own a garden or yard and don’t want to embarrass yourself in front of your neighbors. Looking after a lawn, keep it tidy and fresh is very American after all.
Among the various kinds of lawn mowers, cordless lawn mowers stand out both in terms of technology and convenience.
Let’s have a look at the original, old school reel mowers as an example. They are manual and lightweight, also very cheap, but physically demanding unless you are having a really tiny area.
Having more than an acre? Then forget reel mowers and the most popular push mowers, you’ll need one of the riding lawn mowers or zero turn mowers that we have reviewed earlier this year. They tend to be rather expensive though so if you are on the budget, keep reading.
Most homeowners though typically own a small to medium size yard, with some grass and weed to get rid of by the sidewalks and driveways. For them, and assuming you are one of them, the best option is one of the many push mowers on the market.
Walk behind lawn mowers are just the right size and have enough power to mow lawns up to an acre. Options vary from the cheapest electric lawn mowers to the powerful gas mowers through to the cutting edge cordless or as also known, battery operated lawn mowers.
There are many different styles of lawn mowers and none of them is truly the best. They are all suited for different purposes.
Gas mowers are high maintenance, need experience when filling with gas and oil mix, loud and emit hazardous fumes. Not ideal, unless you want immense amount of power.
Electric lawn mowers are cheap and easy to maintain but the biggest disadvantage is the need for electric sockets in the garden or getting the cumbersome extension cords.
The best cordless lawn mowers on the other hand combine the benefits of the above two with the use of batteries. The best battery operated mowers are very easy to maintain, operate and service while giving you the freedom of a gas mower. No need to dance around the extension cord or leave the grass at the very far end of the yard uncut.
Some of the drawbacks of having batteries is that it makes the cordless lawn mower more expensive than the standard electric corded ones, and you need to keep in mind the charge of the batteries and if necessary, keep extra batteries as backup for longer period of use.
Greenworks is an immensely popular brand when it comes to garden tools, especially walk behind lawn mowers. This Greenworks 16-Inch cordless push mower is a prime example of what modern technology can achieve these days.
The size of the cutting deck is ideal to maneuver through small to medium size lawn even when littered with obstacles, while still being efficient enough to cover meaningful areas in short time.
Cutting height can be adjusted in 5 positions with a lever between 1 1/4 inch and 3 3/8 inch, so it’s great for overgrown grass as well.
This lawn mower is using Greenworks’ brilliant lithium-ion G-MAX battery system, meaning that the battery can be interchanged among the many supported power tools, like snow blowers, leaf blowers or chainsaws of the same brand.
The 25322 is part of the 40V G-MAX system with a 4.0Ah battery capacity. Charging time for the battery is 120 minutes.
Greenworks claims that this cordless mower can for up to 60 minutes and cover an area of 7000 sq ft on a single charge. Not bad at all.
Considering that there are no pull cords, no messing around with mixing oil and gas and literally zero maintenance apart from the occasional sharpening, choosing a cordless lawn mower could be a really satisfying option.
Being battery operated, the Greenworks 25322 starts with a single push of a button.
It features a Smart Cut Technology, which apparently means that the power is adjusted based on the thickness of the grass.
Also offers a 2-in-1 option for handling the clippings, it either disposes them with a rear discharge or mulches them into the lawn.
Warranty is 4-Year limited manufacturer warranty, a nice touch in this market.
Greenworks is not a bad brand but EGO usually steals the show when it comes to customer ratings and excellence in technology.
This EGO Power+ LM2000 cordless lawn mower features a big, 20-inch deck that is very efficient even for medium sized lawns. A 3-in-1 function of mulching, bagging or side-discharge are all there. The mower body has a water-resistant construction (ipx4).
Cutting height can be adjusted in 5 positions with a single lever.
It is powered by a 600W high torque magnetic motor, offering power like a gas engine, and runs up to 3300 rpm.
Most popular battery option that customers get for this EGO cordless mower is the 4.0Ah Kit with 45-minute run time and quick 30-minute rapid charge.
The battery is part of the interchangeable 56V battery system that can be used with other EGO Power+ power tools, just like the EGO Power+ 56V Leaf Blower that we have reviewed last year.
Pretty unique to get LED headlights on a reasonably priced residential use lawn mower but this one has it, allowing operators to mow through the early mornings or late evenings when light is shy. Thanks to being cordless, this mower makes no such noise as the usual gas counterparts, keeping the good relationship with your neighbors.
In line with the previous 16-inch Greenworks model, this cordless lawn mower is widely popular. However, it adds a few extras to the cheaper, standard model.
The size of the cutting deck is increased to 20-inch, ideal for small to medium size yards. As the smaller model, the innovative Smart Cut technology that adjusts the power based on the thickness off the grass is present.
Another extra feature is the use of Dual Blades offering better cut quality, mulching and bagging capabilities.
Cutting height can be adjusted in 5 positions with a lever between 1 1/4 inch and 3 5/8 inch.
G-MAX system is standard in this cordless lawn mower as well, meaning dozens of other power tools can be used with these batteries, assuming they are part of the same 40V system.
One extra feature must be mentioned over the cheaper 16-inch mower, that in this package two batteries are included. This cordless lawn mower can handle an automatic switch-over to the backup battery, once the primary is exhausted.
Full recharge time for the 4.0Ah battery is 3 hours.
Here is a user guide video about the dual battery operation of this cordless lawn mower:
It’s easy to push this big but lightweight mower through the lawn even in wet conditions, there are wheels of 10 inches in the rear and 7 inches in the front.
Warranty is 4-Year limited manufacturer warranty on the mower and 2-Year limited warranty on the battery packs.

We have reviewed earlier the strange but very interesting BLACK+DECKER MTE912 electric trimmer.
This unit is the battery operated version of that similar BLACK+DECKER model. Featuring 3 tools in one, it can be easily converted from mower to string trimmer to an edger.
Cutting path is a rather shy 12-inches, meaning the ideal property size for this little fella should not be much bigger than 750 sq ft, otherwise the mowing will be utterly painful and ineffective.
The cordless mower version also uses the AFS automatic feed system that ensures continuous work without the need to adjust the trimmer cord.
The MTC220 comes with two lithium ion batteries and a charger for that extended run time. The batteries are part of Black and Decker’s interchangeable 20V MAX system, so it can be used in other power tools and lawn and garden care cordless units within the same brand and system.
What do previous customers say?
Perfect for those who own a small garden or hate noisy gas mowers, the MTC220 seems to be a satisfactory option if you want a single tool instead a collection of expensive specialist power units around the house.
Reportedly, batteries take a long time to charge and once fully loaded, a single battery can be drained in 15 minutes, which after the performance slowly fades. Still, its motor is more powerful than some other Black and Decker purpose built string trimmers.
With over 2000 reviews on Amazon, this cheap cordless mower seems well tested and proven so we can recommend for those with small yards (source)
If you want the best cordless lawn mower on the market today, the EGO POWER+ LM2000 series 20-Inch mower is our recommendation. It is highly subjective though, so always pick the lawn mower which is best for your needs.
Which cordless lawn mower is best for the money? Based on features and general feedback of existing customers the Greenworks 16-Inch cordless lawn mower is a great budget lawn mower. On the other hand, based on the best seller list the most popular cordless mower seems to be the more efficient 20-Inch version of the Greenworks mowers.
We also find the Black and Decker MTC220 12-Inch cordless mower / trimmer an interesting concept and a power tool that punches way above its weight. Definitely an alternative to consider when looking for the best cordless lawn mower for your needs.
In case you have a ranch or sizable yard then we recommend looking into ride on mowers or zero turn mowers, as a walk behind mower is only recommended up to 1/2 acre for reasons like efficiency and comfort.
Having your brand new mower? Don’t forget to get a protective cover, it can extend the life of new and old mowers alike.
